Selection principles

We favor jokes that are concise, understandable, and suitable for a broad audience. Most rely on wordplay, literal interpretations, familiar formats, or a quick shift in perspective. We exclude jokes whose main effect depends on humiliating a person or group, sexual content, graphic material, cruelty, or a current tragedy.

Classification

Each joke receives a topic, one primary mechanism, one or more likely contexts, a brief explanation, and a corniness score. Real wordplay does not always respect tidy categories, so a joke labeled “double meaning” may also contain misdirection or an idiom.

Originality and attribution

Many one-line jokes function like folk material: they circulate orally and online in changing forms, often without an identifiable origin. Corny.org does not claim exclusive authorship of familiar anonymous jokes. We write or revise the wording used here and create the classifications and explanations. We do not copy published joke collections wholesale.

If a joke has a known creator or a documented source that warrants attribution, we want to know. Send enough information for us to verify the claim, and we will review the entry.

Corrections

Explanations should be clear and linguistically plausible, but the labels are written for general readers rather than as formal linguistic analyses. If an explanation is inaccurate, a category is misleading, or content appears elsewhere with a documented attribution, contact the editorial desk at hello@corny.org.
